【TELACO一社校】英語教室コースデザイナーインタビューPart2

こんにちは！TELACO（テラコ）英語教室です。

前回は、

「教育の観点から、英語教育は具体的にどのように変わるのか？TELACO英語教室の強みは何なのか？」

レッスンカリキュラム作成担当であるTELACO ENGLISH DISCOVERYコースデザイナーの2人に話を聞きました。

今回は、TELACOのコース・カリキュラムについて、さらに深く聞いていきます。

1.Why separate the classes and curriculum by age?
（TELACOでは年齢によってクラスが分かれていますが、理由は何ですか？）

There are extreme differences in the developmental and behavioral characteristics of children depending on their age. Therefore, in order to facilitate a sociable class that maximizes cooperative learning, the English Discovery course is divided into three age groups. Put simply, children of a similar age can play and learn well together. An added advantage of separation by age is that students will have the opportunity to re-discover familiar themes as they grow older and enter into the next English Discovery course. It is natural to wonder if learners who have a higher degree of experience and confidence, can find value and improvement if they study with other children who have less confidence and skill. However, there are in fact two very positive results of such a learning environment. First, supporting and teaching others who have less knowledge than you can be a very positive and motivating activity that builds greater confidence and enjoyment of English. Secondly, repetition is a key feature of any kind of language that improves long term memory and reduces the risk of permanent errors.

子供の年齢によって、発達や行動の特性にはかなりの差があります。
したがって、相互に協力し合いながら、学ぶ力を最大限に発揮する円滑なクラスを促進するために、English Discoveryコースは3つの年齢別クラスに分かれています。平たく言うと、年齢の近い子供達というのは一緒によく遊び、よく学びます。
年齢別クラスの利点として他には、年齢が上がるにつれ、順にコースを進み、次のコースで学ぶ際、既になじみのあるテーマについて、再発見する機会を得ることができます。
同じ学年でも他の生徒と比べて、英語の経験が豊富で自信のある子供が一緒に学んだ場合、その子の英語の向上や学ぶ価値がそこに見出せるか、と疑問に思われることもあるでしょう。ところが実際、このような環境の中でとても良い効果がみられる点が２つあります。
1点目は、自分より経験が浅いクラスメイトを支えたり教えたりすることでとても前向きな姿勢になり、より自信を持ち、英語を楽しみながら活動に対するモチベーションを高めることができます。2点目は、どんな言語の習得においても繰り返し訓練を行うことが重要となりますが、それにより、長期間における記憶力を向上させ、誤ることのリスクを減らすことができるのです。

それぞれの学年に合った内容を、同年齢の子どもたちと学ぶことで、より効果的なレッスンになるのですね。

2.How is the curriculum designed to help students improve their language skills?
（TELACO英語教室のカリキュラムは、今後どのように役立ちますか？）

Stella Innovations understands that first and foremost parents wish their children to improve their communication skills in English. Children’s language development is very different from adults, and so too are the outcomes of foreign language education for children. Typically, young learners respond better to the ‘Direct Method’ (minimizing the use of the native language in class) than adults. Also, unlike adults, young learners are less cautious and do not perceive goals as being too difficult. And finally, young learners often learn best when they ‘discover’ language while studying other topics. In other words, children thrive in situations in which they are active, not passive. All of these tendencies were considered when Stella Innovations created the English Discovery Course. Therefore, this approach will make them ready for not only English entrance exams or TOEFL tests, but also will enable them to compete in the global world.

子供の言語の発達は大人とは全く違うもので、同様に、子供の外国語教育の成果も大人のそれとはかなり異なります。典型的な例として、大人に比べて幼少の学習者は「ダイレクトメソッド（直接教授法とも言われ、クラス内での母国語の使用は最小限に、母語に訳さず、英語で聞き、理解し、返答する、という教授法）」により、良い効果を示します。
また、大人と違い、幼少の学習者は目標をそれほど意識せず、難しいものと認識しません。他のテーマについて学ぶ中で言葉を「発見」した時、最高に学びの力を発揮します。言い換えると、子供達は、消極的でなく、積極的に何かに関わっているときに一番成長するのです。
こうした傾向をふまえて、ステライノベーションズのEnglish Discoveryコースは開発されています。そのため、大学入試対策やTOEFL試験対策に役立つだけではなく、将来世界を舞台に活躍するグローバル人材を育てるのに役立つことも期待できます。

3.In what ways do you want the students to grow?
（TELACOへ通う子どもたちにどのような子に育ってほしいですか？）

Regarding language skill, children store a lot of information when they are learning in the classroom. However, for long term and meaningful learning, students also need to encounter the language in the world around them. By incorporating a wide variety of interesting themes and topics, we can maximize the opportunities for the children to encounter what they learn in the classroom in the world outside, too. Therefore as their experience with English grows in the classroom, we also grow the students’ interest in English outside of the class. The English Discovery course is also designed to grow self-awareness. In class the students will discover what they like and don’t like, what they think is important and not important, what they want to become, who they want to become and what influence and impact they have on the people and the world in which they live in. By asking questions and incorporating inquiry-based learning, the English discovery course keeps children curious, keeps them active and keeps them growing.

語学のスキルに関して、子供達は教室で学んでいる間にたくさんの情報を蓄積します。しかし、長期的かつ有意義な学びという観点では、周りの世界において実際に言葉と出会うことが重要です。
バラエティに富んだ楽しいテーマやトピックを取り込むことで、子供達が外の世界においても、教室の中で習ったことに実際に出会うたくさんの機会を提供しています。子供達は、教室において英語で多くのことを経験することにより、教室の外における英語への興味も深めていきます。
また、English Discoveryコースは、自身に対する気づきを育てるよう設計されています。クラス内で生徒は、自分が好きなこと、きらいなこと、大切なこと、そうでないこと、どんな人になりたいか、また自分が他の人々や今住む世界にどんな影響やインパクトを与えるかを見つけていきます。質問をすることや、その質問をベースとした学びを通して、本コースは子供達が常に好奇心旺盛で積極的、そして絶えず成長しつづけることをサポートします。
